our curriculum
"Do not tell them how to do it. Show them how to do it and do not say a word. If you tell them, they will watch your lips move. If you show them, they will want to do it themselves." ~ Maria Montessori
Backyard Bears uses a mix of a couple different learning methods! We like to focus on what is engaging for the children by recognizing what sensitive period they are in. For example, if the group is showing interest in developing fine motor skills, we will incorporate appropriate activities for that day/week/month. This helps children develop their own natural creative intuition. Our main goal is to help them advance skills in their own time and way.

Child of the Redwoods
Backyard Bears follows the “Child of the Redwoods” Montessori homeschool curriculum by Aubrey and David Hargis. This is an authentic Montessori curriculum made by AMS certified teachers.
Backyard Bears strives to provide authentic traditional Montessori materials from AMI certified sources. Examples of these are: The Pink Tower, The Brown Stairs, The Globe, Sandpaper Letters, Movable Alphabet, etc!
Montessori education is a hands-on and child-led method that incorporates real world skills and the children’s natural interests and abilities. There are 10 core subject areas that will be explored during Backyard Bear’s Montessori inspired education: Practical Life, Sensorial, Physical Science, Life Science, Humankind, The Arts, Reading and Writing, Grammar, Mathematics, Geometry.
As Backyard Bears is just Montessori based & inspired, we will deviate into different styles of education from time to time! It is our current goal to become AMI certified at some point in the future.
